Guitar Player magazine called his first Austin City Limits performance “stunning.” Recorded on July 31, 1984 when he was 29, and aired as part of ACL’s 10th anniversary, most people outside of his hometown of Austin had never even seen or heard Eric Johnson play (in fact, his debut solo album, Tones, wasn’t released until a year later). He may have been the Lone Star State’s best-kept secret, but by the time he set foot on the ACL stage he had been honing his craft since he was 11, and his fans included guitar gods like Johnny Winter, Billy Gibbons, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Steve Morse.
